Women of Value: G is for Goals

THE A TO Z OF WOMEN OF VALUE

G is for GOALS: Women of Value are Goal Achievers!

Goals is another favourite word of mine. Some people just cringe when they hear the words goal setting, while other embrace goals as a part of their daily lives.

There are many inspiring stories of successful actors, musicians, business owners, artists, athletes and so on that have set themselves goals and because of those goals they achieved what was once only a dream. Achieving goals shows us that we can have the discipline, courage and commitment to see the impossible become possible.

Goals need to be an integral part of our life.  Below is an extract from the website, www.mindtools.com on Personal Goal Setting; in particular I love the three levels of goal setting that they that they suggest.

Many people feel as if they're adrift in the world. They work hard, but they don't seem to get anywhere worthwhile. A key reason that they feel this way is that they haven't spent enough time thinking about what they want from life, and haven't set themselves formal goals.
After all, would you set out on a major journey with no real idea of your destination? Probably not! Goal setting is a powerful process for thinking about your ideal future, and for motivating yourself to turn your vision of this future into reality.
The process of setting goals helps you choose where you want to go in life. By knowing precisely what you want to achieve, you know where you have to concentrate your efforts. You'll also quickly spot the distractions that can, so easily, lead you astray.

You set your goals on a number of levels:

  • First you create your "big picture" of what you want to do with your life (or over, say, the next 10 years), and identify the large-scale goals that you want to achieve.

  • Then, you break these down into the smaller and smaller targets that you must hit to reach your lifetime goals.

  • Finally, once you have your plan, you start working on it to achieve these goals.

A lot of you will be familiar with the acronym that is useful when it comes to goals.  SMART - that goals need to be smart, measurable, achievable, realistic and timely.  I also like to add on ER! where the E stands for Emotional and the R stands for Recorded.

If you don't have an emotional connection to your goal and if you don't write the goal down, that will slow you down from achieving the goal.

For example, a lot of women struggle with weight goals and they carefully set themselves up with a realistic goal such as 1 kg a week over the next 8 weeks.  What keeps you super-charged as you set out to achieve the goals is the EMOTION connected with it: why do you want to loose weight, how will you feel when you loose that weight, loosing this weight what impact will it have and can it have on those around you and so on.

RECORDING the goal is just as important - you can do this on your iphone, or in a journal, or as a note on your fridge or on a index card in your handbag: Look at the goal/s daily, read it aloud to yourself, ask yourself what can I do today to move me another step closer to achieving that goal?

One final tip to remember when it comes to goals is don't have too many at once. One or two major goals focussed on will build momentum, change and achievement rather than taking on a whole lot of goals at once.

Consider an area in your life that you want to see change and growth in - health, fitness, money, relationships, business, family etc.  Choose just ONE are, make ONE goal, and write down 3 to 5 micro-steps you will need to do to achieve that goal.  G is for GOALS, but more importantly G is for GOALS being ACHIEVED.

Now go be a GOAL-ACHIEVER!

  2. Absolutely true. I've even heard that a goal isn't real until its written down. So, the Recording part is definitely important.
